What Do You Measure Daily?

The Last Planner System (R) of Production Control includes a Daily Coordination Meeting for reviewing project task commitments and adjusting when there is a variance to the plan, or an opportunity to improve upon the plan is identified.

Daily measurement is a valuable practice regardless of your industry or discipline. Doug Fleener, retail experience authority and smart guy, recommends Average Daily Sales (ADS) as the measure retailers need to measure.

Designing and constructing a building is quite different than selling products in a store, however Doug’s reasons for recommending a daily metric very much apply.

1. Having a daily goal changes people’s behaviors. The team knows where they must focus that day.

2. It’s easier and more effective to teach and coach people specifically how to better align a daily plan and performance than long term plans. (Doug actually wrote in terms of coaching to increase store ADS – but the central idea is that a daily metric makes coaching more effective).

3. Tracking a daily metric allows you to work on problems that are having the most negative impact on achieving a plan.

Doug’s advice (paraphrased for the building industry): Determine your team’s daily plan (if you don’t already know it), communicate it to the team, start coaching and teaching your team on how to align their plans with performance better.
