Construction: An Industry Divided (According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics)

To understand how ingrained resource thinking is in our society versus flow thinking, consider how the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies the building industry.

Construction, comprised of the people that build bridges, highways, and buildings is considered a sector within the broad classification of Goods-Producing Industries.

Architecture and engineering, comprised of the people that translate concerns and needs into models of the artifacts that they along with builders will create, fall within the Professional and Business Services sector within the only other and opposing broad classification of Service-Providing Industries.

It’s all one industry. No doubt the same artificial distinctions are made by the Bureau for other industries. It’s time to examine and change how we think about work classifications.
