Challenge Unspoken Assumptions Regarding Problems

extension-cord-764787_1280I observed a great example of a project superintendent seeing beyond an unspoken assumption regarding a problem on the project. The issue being discussed was how the project could minimize safety hazards related to electrical extension cords.

The discussion included recommendations on how to keep cords off the floor, storing unused cords and other measures centered around how to better handle extension cords.

In the midst of the discussion the superintendent challenged the team figure out how to eliminate extension cords altogether. Rather than spend time determining how to better work around a hinderance and safety risk just eliminate it all together.

This will require work. But it resets the standard sought and when finally worked out will represent a major improvement in safety and productivity.
